National Cat Society of Malta
Stories from the Sanctuary
Black's Black
Some years ago the National Cat Society was told that there was a cat dying underneath a parked car in Iklin. One of the members went to check and found a black cat with many injuries over its whole body especially its head and face. The cat even had maggots coming out of the wounds. This call for the injured cat came on a Sunday and no vet could be found.
The cat was taken to the Sanctuary where some members slowly cleaned his wounds and even removed all the maggots. Monday morning the cat was taken to a vet where all the wounds were dressed and the volunteers told that these wounds were to be cleaned and dressed twice a day, if the cat was to survive. Black's Black, as the cat was named, not only survived but lived for many years in the Sanctuary.
Mona
Another story with a happy ending is that of Mona. A report came in that that there was a young cat that was continuously crossing a busy road and people feared for its life. The tortoiseshell cat was picked up by one of the volunteers. The day was a Saturday. The cat was taken to a vet where it was declared healthy.
Sunday afternoon the cat was taken to the bazaar the National Cat Society organizes every Sunday in Sliema. A young lady of about 21 kept passing the bazaar and looking at Mona, as the female cat was named.
It was later discovered that this young lady was German and that she had fallen in love with Mona and that she wanted at all cost to take Mona back with her to Germany. Mona was vaccinated and the day before the young lady and her mother were to return to Germany, the cat was taken furtively to their hotel room.
A few moments after the cat was taken into the room and the volunteers and the new owner were still talking, the phone rang. Everyone fell into a panic. A volunteer answered the phone. He was asked if a cat had just been delivered to the hotel room, where the volunteer saw no choice but to confirm. To everyone's surprise the management asked if anything was needed for the cat as the hotel was ready to supply.
Mona was taken to Germany the next day. Her new owner had promised the Society that she would send photos and keep in touch.
Months passed and no contact was made. At last a letter was sent telling the Society that Angel, as the cat was renamed, had become very sick and there had been fear for her life. The vet as a last resort gave Angel some clarithromycin and Angel recovered. Photos of Angel were also sent to us.
A few days later a member of the Society told the vet about the clarithromycin and she decided to try it on some sick cats. These recovered.
Porter
The next story is about Porter, named so because he was portly. A person came to the Sanctuary and decided to adopt Porter. A member of the Society went to visit a few weeks later and saw that Porter had become very thin. When the new owner was asked if Porter was ill, the volunteer was told that Porter was being fed very little so that he would catch mice. The member took Porter back to the Sanctuary as this was not fair on the cat.
